MATERIAL AND TECHNIQUES

Most pieces other than portraits, which are worked up from the start in clay, start with a sketch, sometimes quite small. A larger sketch close to the finished size may be worked up. From there I will work in either a fine clay or if a large piece, clay with a lot of course material in it to diminish slumping and shrinkage. From the clay I will make a mold, plaster for a simple form, Silicone for one that is complex or heavily textured. The mold for me is part of the creative process as I will make changes to the mold or only use parts of it. The mold may be cast in a number of materials, wax for bronze, pressed in clay, cast resin or ferro-cement.  Waxes are sent to the foundry, other materials are cast in house.
